The name cappuccino is said to derive from the Capucin monks because the drink – with its brown color and well known head of steamed milk foam – resembles the color of the Capucin monks’ robes set against their tonsured white heads.

Cappuccino is usually also topped off with cinnamon,  cocoa powder or nutmeg – how that fits in with the Capucin monks I am not quite sure.

Cappuccino is generally described as consisting of one third espresso, one third hot milk, and one third steamed milk foam which floats on the top of the drink. If you are wondering what happens to the espresso foam – known as crema - after you pour in the hot milk, I suppose that will have to remain an espresso mystery.

Cappuccino was developed at the beginning of the 20th century in tandem with the development of pressurized espresso machines. One can imagine a bored barista around the turn of the century inventing Cappuccino as a way of putting all that excess steam to good use.

It was primarily popular in Italy, but it became more well known during and after World War 2 with the popularity of large espresso machines, and especially after 1948, when Gaggia perfected the high pressure espresso machine.

Cappuccino Etiquette Tip:  Did you know that Cappuccino is only supposed to be served in a porcelain cup instead of glass, to retain its heat better? Did you also know that it is considered gauche to have Cappuccino at any time other than in the morning?

I was quite skeptical of the DeLonghi ESAM3300 when I read the first reviews. Truthfully, I couldn’t get over the price. How could anyone pay so much for a machine that just makes espresso?

Today, though, I am writing my own review of the DeLonghi ESAM3300 so I can answer my own question and help out the rest of you. The reason that people pay so much for this machine is that it is worth it.

Let’s start with the way it looks. Quite simply, it is elegant and looks modern and sleek on my kitchen counter. Its stainless steel and black finish clearly show its Italian styling. But that’s just the beginning. I’m going to start this DeLonghi ESAM3300 review by stating flat out that it’s one of the finest kitchen appliances I own. Let me explain.

It is push-button simple. You press a button and it produces flawlessly delicious expresso – just like that. It has a 7.5 cup water reservoir and a tank to hold your fresh whole coffee beans. When you press that button it will grind the beans, brew the espresso and even froth the milk. It has every feature imaginable. But no review of the DeLonghi ESAM3300 would be complete without describing the taste. How do they say it in Italian? Delizioso!

Granted this is just my opinion, but I have to say that the coffee you get from DeLonghi is every bit as good as you get from Expobar, Rancillo, Jura or some other super-high-priced machine. Plus, it is easy to clean. Whenever you think it needs cleaning, all you have to do is pull out and wash the brew mechanism. This is important because a machine that’s hard to clean won’t be cleaned as often and it will be reflected in the taste eventually. With DeLonghi you don’t have to worry about that.

One final observation before I conclude my DeLonghi ESAM3300 review. The machine itself may be somewhat expensive, but you should consider the alternative. If you love high quality espresso or cappuccino, consider what you would have to pay to get a cup every day from Starbucks or some similar place.

With the DeLonghi ESAM3300 I get mine each day at home for free – and it is a fashionable, stylish and extraordinarily well made conversation piece for the home to boot. I highly recommend it.
